Home Zones

Home Zones provide residents with a safe environment where children can play in the streets and residents can socialise and meet with neighbours.

"In this age of concrete jungles and mass production architecture, the preservation of human values is essential." Jeffrey Jellico, Contemporary Architecture 1980

They give equal priority to pedestrians and cyclists alongside motorists. Streets are designed to reduce traffic speeds by introducing passive traffic calming through:

  • Planting trees and introducing 'street furniture' such as seats to slow down traffic.
  • Creating places for children to play.
  • Using a range of high quality surfacing materials.

"Homes zones are sympathetic to the disabled and elderly because of the lack of dominance of cars and motorcycles." Institute of Incorporated Highways Engineers

Home Zones are common and popular in European countries such as Holland and Belgium. Extensive research has been carried out at these highly successful communities which has helped inform the Yours South Lynn Home Zone design.

"In Plymouth and Tameside, Home Zones have led to a reduction in crime of between 80 and 90% and an increase in house prices compared with comparable locations" Institute of Incorporated Highways Engineers.

Yours South Lynn is the UK's first new build Home Zone.

"A sustainable community is a place where people want to live and work and that is prosperous and vibrant and that will improve everyone's quality of life." The Academy for Sustainable Communities.
